I had high hopes for this "new technology" compact zoom with an extended zoom range. The images taken can be exceptional, but unfortunately the lens is subject to significant flare, and the images at 300mm are "soft". Shooting outdoors at the US Open in Raleigh (during a practice round) I found about half of the images satisfactory in terms of sharpness, contrast, and overall image quality. But many were ruined by the flare, and turned many of the views into what looked like a hazy, misty day. At mid aperatures the images appeared sharp from center to corner. The lens also has the habit of extending when pointed downward! It is an adequate lens, but not the spectacular one I had hoped for.
This lens should be avoided by those with high standards of contrast and sharpness, usually found in better Canon lenses. Small details, object definition and color are subdued. The overall image needs much more manipulation in Photoshop to reach the level that the simple EOS 75-300mm IS lens displays. Portrait and action photographers will benefit from the advance technology in the IS and iris diaphragm.
Wonderful crisp photos. This lens is the best lens for its size, it is so compact. People don't think it is very long, until you zoom it and bring them in close. I would buy it again. I bought it because I needed a longer lens than the 17-85mm I had. It was a bit pricy but I wanted it.
