Canon AE-1 Film Camera

These are fantastic cameras... easy to use and they deliver incredible results... but first, understand this is a manual focus FILM camera... not a digital camera. There is no auto-focus... you have to focus. And you can not hook this camera up to your computer and download pictures. It uses film which must be developed. If you are still interested in this type of camera... keep reading for some helpful advise.

1: SEALS: The light seals keep light from sneaking into the film chamber. Even if a camera has never been used, these seals deteriorate over time and need to be replaced. Always ask the condition of the light seals. If they are worn out they will be sticky to the touch and leave residue on the film chamber door.

2: BATTERY DOOR: These cameras have a little door that covers the battery compartment. Because people rarely use the hot-shoe cover to open the battery door properly, they often break the door. Be sure to ask about the condition of the battery door.

3: SQUEAK: Watch out for the Squeak! When the internals begin the dry out and gears begin to show signs of wear the Canon A series has a tendency to make a squeak sound when firing the shutter. It sometimes sounds as if the camera is coughing. This is a sign the camera needs service. Without service the internals will wear even more and will soon fail.

4: VIEW FINDER:
Ask if the viewfinder is clear and free of scratches. While this would not affect picture quality it is kind of annoying to see specs of dust and scratches while trying to compose your shot.

A good seller should provide photos and descriptions to answer these questions, but some people do not have the time or expertise so often times you need to ask. Their answers will tell you a lot about not only the camera… but also the seller.

This is a second camera body for me of this model 35mm camera. I have been pleased with this model. It was an excellent developement by Canon putting excellent photography for anyone. However for this one purchased on ebay it had been used a lot without ever being cleaned. Also it won't activate the speedlite 188a flash designed for use on the AE-1 Program camera. This is the only thing I have found thus far. I haven't tested the capturing of photos on film yet. The seller told me in her ad that she had not tested this camera thus when I told her about it's malfunctioning faults she refunded the money I paid her for it and told me to keep it due to it's inoperable condition. She did not want it back. I am guessing that it will work in nonflash shots. I highly recommend the seller. I took a gamble by purchasing this camera as she said in her ad that it would be. Granddaughter needed 35 mm camera for photography course. Really did not want to pay out the money but did. Camera and all accessories were great. More than I expected. Did not even try to use the camera as I do not know how. Just hope it works out for her as she is one great girl. The shutter is broken. I took more than fifty frames and when I attempted to develop them, all the pictures were underexposed. I then found out that the shutter is broken. I'm bummed, but oh well. I guess that's the consequences you take from buying items from ebay.

The camera makes a squeal noise, so I will have to take it in to get it fixed. Other than that the lenses are great...smiles.

This Canon camera was a great buy. It has been taken very good care of and the seller also emailed me after I received the camera to let me know that the books for it were in the top of the camera case. I had forgotten that the camera came with books and I would not have found them or it would most likely have been years before I found them. Good and attentive seller who cares for the buyer's best interest.

I like this camera becouse it is a sturdy workhorse of a camera. it will take a lot of abuse in the field not being made of plastic like the newer cameras. it does have appauture priority if you chose or manual settings.

Introduced in the 70's it revolutionized many of the concepts for next era camera designs especially electronic applications and mass produced technique with a lower cost of production with the use of plastic injection molding, resulting in simpler assembly of parts. It also main mainstream devices like Power Winder and electronic Speedlites. The AE-1 was controlled by electronics rather than by mechanical functions & depends solely on battery power for all of its functions. Despite being different from the mainstream camera design for it's time, the AE-1 gained a huge following during its production time. This was primarily due to Canon's ability to promoting the camera & the fact that this was one of the first affordable cameras to the average household.

Generally regarded to as a classic and top amateur SLR model due to the impact it has created with its then innovative concept that went on to influence other future camera designs, both Canon and other makes, of the industry as a whole. The camera was replaced by the AE-1 Program in 1981.

History aside the Ae-1 is still a work house and if your into shooting film you won't me disappointed in a well maintained AE-1 still today.

In the age of digital cameras, the AE-1 is still my favorite for taking into the woods looking for wildlife. Takes crisp clear pictures and excellent speed for moving subjects. Digitals have their place, but when that once in a lifetime opportuity comes....give me this 35mm. It never disapoints me.

I bought this camera for my son to complete a high school project. The camera has many manual settings that enables him to manipulate how it takes the picture. He loves the camera ans uses it all the time.

I love this camera. It is my third one. I love to shoot black and white film with a camera that has minimal gadgets and settings. It is easy to use and I can get great shots.

I love the older cameras. I had a canon when they first came out with the AE-1
model around 1984 to 1985. It's easy to use, you can take pictures manualy or on the auto feature. I lost mine in a fire 3 days after Christmas.We lost every thing.So I am happy I found another one, and I can take clear, crispt pictures again.The digial cameras are nice, but I have yet to find one that would compare to the old canon.

Very good funtions to take a picture using the mechanical film camera. Easy to handle and It makes a good photo picture what I want. A nice camera to recommend to other person who wants to but a film camera.
