Bought for speed first, price second.
After 6 weeks, very pleased and would buy it again.
Still waiting to see toner lifespan and cost of replacement toner.

Pro - inexpensive, fast, quality of print easily meets my homeschool needs.
Con - decent sized footprint

  Great Little Printer
Review created: 02/11/08

I have two of these now and they are great little workhorses. We use them in a shipping environment and they hold up to the task. I especially like the ability to use the seperate input tray and it feeds flawlessly with peel-back labels that we use for product labeling. Get them before they are gone!

  Brother HL-5240 laser printer

I already have two inkjet printers, but I had a need to print higher volume in black only. I am currently pursuing a doctoral degree and the amount of reading required is incredible. I find it helpful to print out many of the online articles and now I can even afford to print out all or part of the e-books.

The Brother HL-5240 is relatively compact; I was able to make space for it by a little rearranging of my computer desk. Setup was simple and quick. You should be able to make a test print within just a few minutes of opening the box. One of the features that sold me on this model was the ability to make duplex (two-sided) prints. I decided to put this to the test right away and printed out an entire e-book (around 175 pages). Paper saving alone will pay for this printer in a few months by printing two-sided.

There is a more expensive model that does automatic duplex printing (I believe it runs about $50 extra) which you may want to spring for if you do a lot in that mode. If you use the manual feature to do this, I recommend that you don't print more than 50 pages or so at a time. The printer prints all the even-numbered pages first, then you flip them over and run them back through and it prints the odd-numbered pages. This is NOT done from the magazine, but rather from the auxiliary input tray that folds down when in use, and up out of the way when it is not being used. I tried to put too many sheets in at once while putting the pages back in to print the second side, and a number of pages fed through together. This messed up the page order, though the book is still readable (I hole-punched the pages and put them in a three-ring binder.

I am on my second ream of paper and only had one glitch; a page from that long print job was stuck in the printer but no error light came on. I was going nuts trying to figure out why I kept getting an error message in the print queue until I decided to take out the toner cartridge for some reason. Once the offending piece of paper was removed, the printer worked perfectly again.

This printer is MUCH faster than an inkjet, to if you are printing high volume, it will make the job go quickly. The price per page should turn out to be considerably less than on an inkjet too. The pages have a slight tendency to curl, but nothing I can't live with. The print quality is very good for text. I have not tried it with any graphics or photos yet, as that was not the primary reason for purchasing this machine. All in all, I am happy with my purchase and would recommend this model to others.

Brothers done it again An Insanely Fast, No Nonsense Laser
Review created: 03/13/08

Pros:
Very fast, superb text and simple graphics quality, intuitive driver, great paper handling...

Cons:
Sub-par photo quality, paper meter bar on front of tray doesn't work well

This will be my third laser printer. Why? Pretty much because I like to have new toys to play with. My first printer: A Konica Minolta PagePro 1350W. It worked flawlessly for as long as I had it, but I saw a sweet deal on a Brother HL-2040 and grabbed that and gave the Konica to a friend. The HL-2040s drum is on its last legs. Nothing wrong with the printer, but I decided a new printer not only is about the same cost of the drum, but it gives me a new toy. Given my HL-2040s rock-solid reliability, I looked at getting another Brother laser. I was considering either the HL-5240 or the HL-5250DN.

Pros:
Quiet; fast; crisp text; versatile

Cons:
Large footprint; interface cable not included; high cost of replacement print drum

Supplementing our 4-year-old Epson Stylus C60 color inkjet with a black-and-white laser printer was prompted by my husband's and my changing "extra-curricular" responsibilities, as well as our children's scholastic needs. Although the Brother HL-5240 is arguably more laser printer than we need, I appreciate the speed, silence, and crisp print detail, as well as the fact that I won't have to replace a toner cartridge for a long time. Here's what you get: SPECIFICATIONS: Color: Dark gray with light gray trim Dimensions: Listed at 14.6"W x 9.7"H x 15.1"D, although mine is a bit smaller each way..

  Wonderful!

Pros:
Prints clearly, quickly, and has wonderful printing options

Cons:
Doesn't warn you before toner runs out

I really enjoy this laser printer. It has many functions which are perfect for my use -- I draft and revise documents several times before finalization, and I LOVE that you can print multiple pages on one piece of paper. You can also set it for a "toner save mode" and the quality isn't reduced very much at all! One word regarding the toner -- as with most laser printers, the toner cartridge provided with the machine was far from full. Though the printer is supposed to warn you before the toner runs out, it didn't for me. I don't know if it was because it was the cartridge which came with the..
