It is a great coffee maker. The original was made by General Electric which sold it to Black and Decker and they sold it in 1999 to another company which MUST carry the name and logo of B&D.
I have had four GE / B&D / Applica Consumer Products Inc/ and agree with the first reviewer, the greatest change is the design of the carafe spout.
One must understand this an under counter unit, not a hidden appliance. If it is mounted to far to the rear, you can not see some of the controls and it will steam up under the counter and distroy the cabinet finish. A little thought before hand, can keep one free of these minor "problems".
It does take two hands to insert the water resivoir, that is no problem for normal household use...this is done once a day and takes about ten seconds.
There are some features for the sales pitch, i.e. the one coffee jump in the morning, before the brew is finished.Personally that first cup has most of the coffee taste (and caffine)and the rest of the pot suffers due to the impatient coffee drinker BUT if one needs that function, he has absolutely no need of the timing mechanisim and has overspent foolishly. I personaly have rid that feature, it has a tendancy to keep the carafe from reseating corectly on the keep warm heater.
I like the clock action. If the coffee timer or warmer is on, it is illuminated, no red light is needed, I guess that is why it was not included the latest model.
To chance redundacy, this is my fourth in over 30 years. If I did not think / know it was good and better than the others, I would not have purchased # 4.
What I liked about the ODC440 was the redesign of the pour spout and the fact that it still makes good tasting coffee like the good old ODC325 (the perfect design in my opinion).
What I absolutely hate about this new design is… 1. The clock and digital read out is on the topside so when mounted under your cabinet it’s hard to see unless your five foot tall. 2. They don’t have a red light on the control panel so you don’t know if it’s on or off, just says on in the digital read out and like I said you couldn’t see it. 3. No night light on the clock. 4. And the biggest challenge of the entire coffee maker is the water fill tank; it doesn’t have a handle so now I’m finding I have to use two hands to hold the water container while filling.
I know when it comes time again to buy another coffee maker unless Black & Decker changes these design problems I’ll be looking for a different Manufacture.
This is why you see the old ODC325 Space Makers go for $65.00 or more, people know a good design when they see it.
For as long as I can remember I've had a Black and Decker undercounter coffee maker. They last, are attractive, practical and make great coffee. This newest model installs differently than the last models. Black and Decker does not provide enough spacers and the screws are too short. I had to make a trip to Lowes to get the correct items at a cost of $5.00.
My friend has one and says she loves it. When i saw it in her kitchen i wanted one. It works perfect - coffee tastes good out of it - and it saves so much space on the counter - she put a mug rack right next to it under the counter too and it looks great!
