Gil Evans has done a tremendous job.

I have bought this CD when I had only heard one track from the record- Boplicity. I have fallen in love with Gil Evans' music and that is why I immediately decided to buy the record. PLus I have read Miles Davis' autobiography, where he talked about the album in really superlative terms.
Now about the CD. Gil Evans did a tremendous job with arranging the 2 songs he arranged, Boplicity and Moon Dreams. I personally was not too astonished by Gerry Mulligan's arrangements, I cannot seem to find my way into Mulligan's playing and arranging.
That is the actual reason, why I rated this album "only" good, not excelent, because I have bought it to hear Gil Evans' arrangements, and there were only two of them (which I was not aware of when I was purchasing the CD), and the rest were Mulligan's or Lewis' arrangements, and those did not thrill me that much. Still the CD is very good, I like the idea that Miles Davis thought of- the idea of 6 horns playing as a choir, with the rhythm section behind them. It sound very natural, peaceful and beautiful. Lee Konitz, Miles Davis and Gerry Mulligan did a good job soloing, my favorite being Lee Konitz.
My personal favorite on the whole album is Boplicity, being a superb composition and beautifully arranged piece.
I still recommend to buy the album, because it brings a different view in playing jazz and Miles Davis' fans (and Gil Evans' fans) should cerainly buy this CD. But do not expect that arrangements of Mulligan and Lewis will be equally interesting and thrilling as the arrangements of Gil Evans.
