I have wanted to reacquire this box set since it, along with much of my CD collection, was stolen from me in 1990; about two years after I purchased it.
I had always liked Dylan from a distance but this collection took me to a new level of appreciation for Dylan's unique voice, both metaphorical and literal. After consuming this collection of songs, I saw beyond the classifications of post modern beat folk poet storyteller etc.... Dylan transcends his context and speaks to the timeless issues of mind, heart, and relationship. Whether it’s between two people or an individual and his government, Dylan challenges the collective and individual perspective.
This set has some of the best versions of Tangled Up in Blue and Maggie's Farm I have heard. It also includes a very informative booklet covering the life, career, and songs of Bob Dylan through the early nineteen-eighties. If you already love Dylan or if you like Dylan but want to know more, this is an excellent choice. I’m glad to have it back

Pros: Some great lyrics, Some interesting performances, Valuable for history, Some decent music
Cons: Some lousy songs, Some disappointing omissions, Some moments of voice and music.
As I have been working my way through my father's Bob Dylan c.d. collection, I've been interested to discover he has so many collections of Bob Dylan's works as opposed to actual albums. As I understand it, albums like "Blonde On Blonde" are considered classics; the only songs I've heard from the album are from the soundtrack to "No Direction Home" (reviewed at: http://www.epinions.com/content_409551933060 ) and "Biograph," a massive three disc boxed set collection that has quite a bit of writing to accompany it. Unlike "No Direction Home," which proved its worth ultimately by having two...

Inspiring Array of Dylan's Best Works

Pros: Great variety of Dylan's styles, 53 songs! All his best.
Cons: I don't like switching CDs all the time to hear the songs on the other ones.
My sister got this box set for Christmas one year and I was extremely jealous of her. Here's why: In this box, there are three special CDs, each with at least 17 songs, with carefully selected Dylan Greats on them. Dylan's best songs are on these three CDs. It's really a chronologue of Dylan's developing music styles over the course of his career. Some examples of his love songs are Lay Lady Lay, If Not for You, Visions of Johanna, To Ramona, and Isis. These songs consist of his sweeping style of loving the women through his songs, and it also consists of upbeat and happy songs about fun love.

Pros: outstanding retrospective of brilliant songwriter
Cons: none
I got this from my mom last year. Being a big Bob Dylan fan, I was excited to get it. I was curious/skeptical as to how they were going to capture an incredible 30 (at the time - this was released in '85) year career. Think about it - Bob Dylan is a giant not only in the quality of his work, but also in sheer volume. So many of his songs have become pop culture anthems (Blowin in the Wind, Knockin of Heaven's Door, etc.) but just as many are unheard of and brilliant. He's produced an average of about an album a year since 1960. They did a marvelous job, somehow. I know that if I were...
