Bang the Drum Slowly. "Lay it on thin." Baseball flick with De Niro.

Pros:
Good story. Nice use of music. Early De Niro.

Cons:
Bland Moriarty. Really bad fashion.

Bang the Drum Slowly was first a popular novel by Mark Harris (the second in his Henry Wiggins series) in 1956, then a 60-minute, made-for-TV movie later that year starring Paul Newman and then finally a remake in 1973 with Robert De Niro and Michael Moriarty. Typically the one that you ll rent at the video store is the full-length Hollywood version from , but some copies are around from the 50s. Pros:
DeNiro's acting, nice baseball action, great changes in characters

Cons:
Michael Moriarty, so-so cinematography.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. The title...

Pros:
Robert DeNiro

Cons:
The rest of the film

That's what this movie was called when I was working on my bachelor's degree, and to an extent, that's a fair description. Michael Moriarty (known to most readers as LAW AND ORDER's Ben Stone) and Robert DeNiro play a pitcher-catcher team who can't be more different personally and still be of the same race. During the course of the movie, it is discovered that DeNiro's character has lymphoma, a form of cancer, and the rest of the movie is taken up with Moriarty's efforts to keep his partner's illness under wraps (after all, that was what one did when someone in his social class got as sick as.
