THIS 1980 RELEASE FOLLOWED UP THE SUPER SUCCESSFUL "EXCITABLE BOY" ALBUM IN A WAY THAT SATISFIED THE APPETITE I HAD DEVELOPED FOR NEW EXAMPLES OF ZEVON'S UNDENIABLE GENIUS. THE BLEND OF CLASSICAL VIOLIN WORK FOLLOWED BY STRONG ROCK BEAT WORKED VERY NICELY. THE TITLE SONG FAIRLY SCREAMS "AUTOBIOGRAPHY" REFLECTING WARREN'S BATTLES WITH HIS OWN DEMONS. "A CERTAIN GIRL" IS GOOD OLD ROCK 'N ROLL. "JEANNIE NEEDS A SHOOTER" FEATURES COLLABORATIVE WRITING WITH BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND GUITAR WORK BY ANOTHER GENIUS,JOE WALSH! "JUNGLE WORK" IS IN THE SAME VEIN AS "ROLAND THE HEADLESS THOMPSON GUNNER" AND JUST AS DARK & CONTAGIOUS. "GORILLA, YOU'RE A DESPERADO" SHOWS ZEVON'S LOVE-LORN HUMOROUS SIDE AND CAPTURES MANY OF THE SUPERFICIAL VALUES OF THE LATE 70's/EARLY 80's. OF COURSE, HIS OLD FRIEND LINDA RONSTADT LENDS HER BEAUTIFUL VOICE(and looks) TO A COUPLE OF THE NUMBERS. MY FAVORITE TUNE ON THE ALBUM IS "PLAY IT ALL NIGHT LONG", THE WORDS, THE MUSIC, IT ALL WORKS! THE LAST CUT IS "WILD AGE", OFFERING AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE WAY THOUSANDS OF KIDS TURNED OUT AND A SURE-FIRE WAY TO RE-AWAKEN THE REBELLIOUS FREE-SPIRIT ATTITUDE SHARED BY MILLIONS. I CONSIDER MYSELF A ZEVON AFFICIANADO AND THIS IS BY FAR MY SINGLE MOST FAVORITE WARREN ZEVON COLLECTION! BUY IT! PLAY IT! LOVE IT! LIVE IT! jerzeyturtle@hotmail.com

Pros: great songs; straight-forward rock 'n roll; excellent accompanying musicians
Cons: Not for children
That was a scary little scrape with my shadow the other day. After being drugged and forced to listen to Sublime for an entire week, I decided I needed something a bit more mellow to soothe the savage beast and get me back on track. I searched through my record collection and found: Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School, (1980) by Warren Zevon. This one followed Zevon s (1976) self-titled debut album and his (1978) classic Excitable Boy. Excitable Boy is the album that contained Zevon s only big hit, Warewolves of London, and was pretty darned good, but some people consider Bad Luck Streak in...
