I bought this DVD because I love this movie. It is one that everyone could watch. The younger ones might not understand it. Robin Williams is a good actor and he is so caring as a doctor in this movie.I would sugested that anyone that likes a movie that doesn't have sex and violance in it this is the one. This movie is about caring and compasion. The only other thing I can say is you will enjoy it.
The first time I saw this movie I was stuck to the screen. You always want to know what is going to happen next. Not that it is a thriller. Very good cast. The doctor who takes a chance with the experimental drug that actually works for the time being. Then the relapse of the patient is heart breaking. This movie is a MUST HAVE for anyone. I am actually bidding on it again because my copy mysteriously disappeared. Buy the movie or even rent it it will not be a waste.
I did have the VHS tape and tape got tangled so I wanted to replace it with a recording that was easier to deal with. I love the story because it shows the doctor's impact on the staff and made the aware that mentally ill persons were actually people not objects to be cleaned up after.
The movie also invited the viewer into the idea that someone cares about the mentally ill and does try to improve their existance and also look toward a permant cure for these people. The story is moving and caring and gives the audience with the feeling of wishing they too could become involved in helping these unfortunate people. It is a story worth watching more than once and sharing with their friends.
Wonderful movie, with an awesome cast. It's easy to see why this movie is on everyone's top 100. Take the opportunity to own this wonderful movie, you and your family will watch this one over and over.
I have wanted this movie for some time and was thrilled to find it on DVD. This movie is a must for any collector who loves these types of movies done with a superb cast! This movie requires the watcher to have a box of kleenex or more than one hanky to watch! I love to watch a good tear jerker every now and then and this is one of the best! If you are a Robin Williams or Robert De Niro fan or both you must have this movie!

Awakenings - Alone inside my mind

Pros: Williams is stellar
Cons: .....
Loosely based on a true story, Awakenings introduces you to the strange nuances of a handful of patients that appear to be catatonic but, in fact, are able to react to certain situations. Dr. Malcom Sayer (Robin Williams) approaches this situation in an unique way. Shy and retiring, Sayer spends so much time engrossed in his medical journals he often loses touch with the real world. Watching his patients on a daily basis, he notices that often they seem to connect but no one strives to push them a little further. Investigating the backgrounds of these people, he discovers each of them had...

To Feel Alive

Pros: Robin Williams, Robert De Niro, Great Story
Cons: It is sad
My husband has this imaginary list of quintessential (at least in his mind) movies that he wants me to see. Usually they are very odd, or strange (or bad) and I am getting to fear the phrase "you've got to see this movie it is a defining piece of film, which usually translates to I love this film, but it is actually very bad. But every once and a while, I escape my fate and the film is actually very good, which was the case with Awakenings. This is a very well done and very moving movie. Be forewarned, it will make you cry. Plot: Dr. Sayer, Robin Williams, lands a job as a doctor in a chronic.

MATT'S 101 FAVORITE SCREENPLAYS: #97

Pros: Careful calibration of sentiment and humor; structurally elegant; unconventional treatment of a maligned genre
Cons: A few lapses into cliche and unbelievable "movie" moments
** WARNING - SPOILERS AHEAD! ** #97 AWAKENINGS (1990) The Writer Steven Zaillian, based on the book by Oliver Sacks, M.D. Why It's Here I find it a little strange to be writing about "Awakenings" for this list of my favorite screenplays...mainly because it's a little strange that "Awakenings" was a feature film in the first place. This picture, the chronicle of a group of catatonic patients who experienced a miraculous and all-too-brief drug-induced resurrection in a Bronx hospital in the late sixties, is the type of story that has fueled countless maudlin, over-the-top television movies over.

The simplest things...

Pros: Great acting, directing & script.
Cons: Unhappy ending- but hey, it's a true story.
This movie is based on a true story. Like most true stories, it doesn't have a happy ending. The cast Dr. Malcolm Sayer... Robin Williams Leonard Lowe... Robert DeNiro Elanor Costello... Julie Kavner Dr. Kaufman... John Heard Paula... Penelope Ann Miller The Story... In 1966 Dr. Sayer (Robin Williams) applies at a chronic care facility in the Bronx. At first it appears he may not get the job- having almost no experience with people- only research- he seems to be unqualified. Apparently desperate for doctors, they point out he had patients as an intern, right? This is kind-of an important...

What Do You Mean It's Not 1926?

Pros: thoughtful, inspiring, warm
Cons: need a lot of kleenex
Imagine if you will waking up one morning and finding yourself somewhere other than home. Imagine the shock of finding out that it is 40 years later than what you remember and that all your family and friends are dead and gone. This would be devastating, but this is what most of the patients in this film encounter upon "awakening". This movie is based upon a true story of the efforts of a Dr. Sayer back in the 60's. Dr. Sayer has spent all his life doing research type jobs, not interacting with people. When he first begins to work at this clinic he is very nervous and a bit scared. He is not..
