Pros: Teaches you how a car works in clear but not overly simplistic terms.
Cons: Just give me the repair instructions already!
This book was written very clearly, was easy to understand for car dummies like me but yet not overly simplistic either, made good use of cross-references, had a number of useful diagrams, and overall was very useful. It is well-organized, presents clear definitions (with a glossary at the end), and gives a basic overview of all the major components of your car -- how each piece works and how it all ties in together. I especially valued the tips on potential hazards that you must be careful for, like the danger of opening a pressurized component of your car. Obvious as they may seem, we...

Pros: money-saving advice, easy to understand
Cons: instructions for performing repairs are not always applicable to your vehicle
The title of the book says it all. An "auto repair expert and consumer advocate..." who "has appeared on 'The Today Show'... 'NBC Nightly News' and is a regular contributor to the Los Angeles Times", the author's advice is sound. The information and tips provided really go a long way in demystifying the inner-workings of your car. It's also a handy reference tool to keep around. After reading the book, I now know how to change my own oil and oil filter, change the air filter, fuel filter, rotate my own tires, etc..
