
Pink Floyd lacked identity, consistency

Pros:
Fat Old Sun is one of Pink Floyd s better songs, with If close behind.
Cons:
The title track and Alan s Psychedelic Breakfast are, in many spots, painful to listen to.
Although Atom Heart Mother treads lightly on ground Pink Floyd would saturate just a few years later, it s as schizophrenic as the band s then-recently booted leader, acid-fried Syd Barrett. The album s bookends, a long, epic instrumental written mostly by classical-music composer Ron Geesin and a throwaway jam session with silly distractions, sandwich a strong trio of songs, one each by the group s three main songwriters.
