The blow-by-blow account of mankind's third attempt to land a man on the moon, as told from the prespective of the mission commander himself.

The real-life characters of this event leap from the celluiod in a nonstop, action-packed, Hollywood blockbuster, and popularized the term, "Failure is Not an Option".

It should be required viewing for every middle school student.

The screen writers did a very excellent script. Its a good all round story, tense exciting, funny and the whole family can watch. No sex or blood and gore,my kind of movie. Always like Tom Hanks. Didn't dislike anything.

I bought this for my eight year old son. He has recently shown an interest in space and recently I assisted in a classroom where Bruce Melnick visited.
The whole EBAY transaction was flawless as was the DVD.

This film captures a portion of American History and glorifies the nations struggle. It personifies a nations will to fight on till all cards have been played. To never give up when face with adversity to be an American.
Each character in this film exemplifies our American culture and the people who we call neighbors and friends. Great for the whole family regardless of age. Wire your stereo to the television and blast off for the moon.

We Fly Through the Air With NO AIR!!!
Review created: 12/09/06

Tizz OK. Nothing to write home about, just ok. Just not as good as it could have been. Heck, FireFly was way better than that!!!! But, it's a true, so it makes for a good flick.

Houston - We Have A Problem...

A vividly rendered dramatization of Apollo 13's true-life brush with disaster on the way to the Moon in 1971. This mesmerizing film combines computer graphics, archive footage and seamless special effects to recreate the adrenalized odyssey of Astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert who battled astronomical odds to make it back to Earth. Academy Award Nominations: 9, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor--Ed Harris, and Best Supporting Actress--Kathleen Quinlan. Academy Awards: 2, including Best Film Editing.

Three men spent just under 143 hours in space, did not make their planned lunar landing, and...

Resisting urge to say "Houston, we have a problem"...

Pros:
Great cast, script, directing, music, special effects...

Cons:
... ... ... really, not many at all...

Ever since I was a small child I ve been fascinated by space and space travel, but somehow I d managed not to see Apollo 13 until today. Various concerns about how this film about the ill-fated mission would be handled were in the back of my mind, of course would it be overtly patriotic, would it be desperately melodramatic but having seen it I m glad to say that in Ron Howard s capable hands, none of these came to light. In fact, Apollo 13 turned out to be one of the most moving films I ve seen in a very long time. The movie starts with a group of friends astronauts and their families...

  Apollo 13: "...Houston...we have a problem."

Pros:
Superb film in every way!

Cons:
None

"...Houston.. we have a problem." On April 13, 1970, a radio transmission containing these words crackled sharply back to earth from the tiny Apollo 13 spacecraft, which was carrying three men on a quarter-million mile journey to the moon. Spoken by the spacecraft's commander, with a deliberate calm inculcated by years of training and experience as an aviator and astronaut, these words awakened the world to a deadly accident which had just occurred nearly 200,000 miles from earth... an accident which literally threatened to maroon the three passengers aboard Apollo 13 in space for all...

Apollo 13 (1995): The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress
Review created: 04/28/07
by: Ed.Williamson -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Very realistic character portrayals.

Cons:
The underlying optimism is inspiring, but may be seen by some as too much.

The superb science fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein, who passed away in 1988, once write a novel, published in 1966, entitled The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress, which was not about a space flight to the moon, but rather about a revolt by colonists on the Moon against Earth. Yet even so, the American astronauts of Apollo 13 discovered a harshness all their own when they attempted to voyage to Luna and land there for their explorations. An explosion in their spacecraft, and the ensuing probability of their doom, held the world in suspense for a few days back in April of 1970. Those of us who...

  "We've just lost the moon."
Review created: 05/15/04
by: alexdg1-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Movies

Pros:
Fine acting, great directing, terrific score, out-of-this-world special effects.

Cons:
I'm sure the nitpickers out there will pick out little "mistakes." Not me, though.

It's hard to believe that over 30 years ago we lived in an era when American astronauts were not confined to flying in Earth orbit on the now-grounded Space Shuttle; from July 1969 to December 1972, 12 men walked upon the dusty, rocky surface of the moon, almost 250,000 miles and three days away by way of an Apollo spacecraft. Had everything gone according to plan, that number would have been 14, had it not been for a hidden design flaw in the command module's wiring near the oxygen tanks which caused a near-fatal explosion as Apollo 13, the third lunar landing scheduled for April 14, 1970,...
