Loosely based on Joseph Conrad's novel, "Heart of Darkness",
"Apocalypse Now" is a surreal journey upriver in the middle of the Vietnam War.Martin Sheen is given a mission to assassinate Colonel Kurtz (Brando),who has been running amok deep in the jungles of Cambodia with his own military unit/religious cult. Sheen hitches a ride upriver with a small group of loose cannons and drop-outs, finding madness waiting behind every bend in the river.
Robert Duvall gives a memorable performance as the gung-ho Col. Kilgore, and Marlon Brando gives one of his best performances as he loses himself in the twisted mind of Colonel Kurtz. The film was re-released with an extra 50 minutes of footage added. This movie is epic in every sense, and when the screen fades to black at the end, you'll have gone through one of the most
unique experiences in modern filmaking.

Apocalypse Now Redux - Intelligent Poetic Masterpiece
Review created: 12/21/06
by:

The Best Vietnam war film ever made period. Francis Ford Coppola's characters are so in depth, and give remarkable performances. I think this is Marlon Brando's best performance, he makes it seem as though his character is actually himself. All of the dialog is so well written and gives a poetic sense of greatness. I have never seen a better opening to a movie, The End by The Doors against a napalm bombing background, is so perfect. The end of the film is also just as excellent as the beginning in its own stirring way, and with The Doors playing in the background again. "I love the smell of napalm in the morning."

Recommended War Films:
Downfall (A movie covering the last days and downfall of Nazi Germany) 5/5
Saving Private Ryan (I don't think I need to say anything) 5/5
Apocalypse Now Redux (In my opinion the best Vietnam war film ever made) 5/5

Our Motto (Redux) : Apocalypse Now
Review created: 08/21/01

Pros:
Everyone, everything.

Cons:
New scenes had reason for being deleted.

Theater Now I was really excited to see this movie this summer. Apocalypse Now has always been one of my favorite movies, and so when I heard that Francis Ford Coppola was re-releasing it in theaters with the edited-out footage, I nearly wet myself. I knew that even if every other summer movie was horrible this year, there would be two that were great, this and the re-release of 2001..(by the way, does anyone know if they are still planning on re-releasing that in theaters as I had heard some months ago?). I was there in New York City the day Redux(as I'll refer to this updated version of the.

"The Horror, The Horror", Into the Heart of Darkness of Vietnam
Review created: 01/27/04

Pros:
A Sprawling, Psychological War Masterpiece from Francis Ford Coppola Made Even Better.

Cons:
None though Some Will Not Like The New Scenes.

If there's film subject concerning war that is carefully talked about in film, it was Vietnam. In the 1970s, there were great Vietnam films like Hal Ashby's Coming Home and Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter and in the 80s; there was Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket and Oliver Stone's Platoon. Through out the past thirty years, Vietnam has often debated whether as a war against Communism or a risk Americans shouldn't have been involved in which was recently talked about Errol Morris' documentary The Fog of War about Kennedy/Johnson Secretary of Defense chief Robert S. McNamara. Then, there...

  The Horror, The Horror
Review created: 09/12/01

Pros:
A flawed but brilliant masterpiece.

Cons:
Marlon Brando (although his scenes work better in this new cut).

The events of the last twenty-four hours have shocked and stunned me as much as they have the rest of the nation. All of a sudden, my difficulties with my new kabuki musicalization of The Last Seduction seem so petty and unimportant. Being the patriotic American that I am, I immediately called Joseph my manager and Madame Rose, my publicist to see what a celebrity of my stature could do to help those stricken by yesterday's events at the Pentagon and World Trade Center. The next stop on my Ssssoundssss of Ssssilence tour was supposed to be a benefit for the Godiva Golfers of America, some...

  The Apocalypse! Part 1
Review created: 02/17/03
by: updateghost-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Movies

Pros:
My new #1 film, excellent scenery, dialogue, acting.

Cons:
Very long.

I guess I'll have to confess to you all this... I still have not seen the original version of Apocalypse Now, but since I own the DVD for the Redux version, and that tells you what scenes are new, and which aren't, its looking to me as if the Redux version is more fun, more serious, more explaining, etc. I'm pretty sure that once I finally view the original, that I'll still prefer this version. Anyway, about the title of this review... in the write previous to this, I talked of the apocalyptic events going on around the world right now, and I thought: what better of a time to do writes and...

  then and Now

Pros:

Apocalypse Now Redux is a deeply flawed masterpiece from Francis Ford Coppola. You might wonder how "deeply flawed" and "masterpiece" can fit so snugly together, and believe me, I wondered the same until I saw this film. On the surface, the film is a retelling of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, only set in Vietnam and Cambodia as opposed to the original story's dark heart of Africa. Coppola goes so far as to let Kurtz, the mad ruler of an unruled land in Conrad's story, keep his name in this film. Below the surface, this movie isn't so much a war parable as it is a hypnotic alarum on man's.
