Album notes
Metallica: James Hetfield (vocals, guitar); Kirk Hammett (guitar); Jason Newsted (bass); Lars Ulrich (drums).
Recorded at One To One Studio, Los Angeles, California between January & May 1988.
Following the tragic death of bassist Cliff Burton, Metallica regrouped with Flotsam & Jetsam bassist Jason Newsted to record this ambitious double album. Metallica made their reputation playing complex music at superhuman speed, and when James Hetfield's lyrics caught up with his compositional skills, the band became a force to be reckoned with. Everything came together on 1986's MASTER OF PUPPETS, and JUSTICE picks up where PUPPETS left off.
Utilizing intricate yet crunching riffs, layered guitar melodies and intelligent lyrics, Metallica forged an identity as the leader of '80s metal. Hetfield's lyrics are often quite dark, touching on injustice (the title song), insanity ("The Frayed Ends Of Sanity") and his own troubled childhood ("Dyers Eve"). They also had a progressive streak a mile wide, as shown in the involved arrangements that often brought the song lengths close to 10 minutes. JUSTICE also marked a turning point for drummer Lars Ulrich, who began replacing his off-kilter playing with a more straightforward groove approach, and for the band, who made their first video (for "One") and thus scored their first hit.

Essential Listening - Metallica's Progressive Side
Review created: 01/15/06

Complex arrangements, odd time signatures, epic songs. No, I'm not talking about Yes or Dream Theater. I'm talking about Metallica and their 1988 offering "...And Justice for All." Here is Metallica at the height of their complexity and depth, taking off from where their masterpiece "Master of Puppets" left off. The subjectmatter is dark and, at times, dismal and forboding. But the music is enlightened, in your face metal. "...And Justice for All" was Metallica's answer to progressive metal before turning to simpler arrangements with the "Black Album."

I would give five stars if the bass was actually existent in the mix. Jason Newstead, an excellent bass player, is missing from the album. The bass guitar is simply not there, and that's disappointing. Otherwise, it would be an truly excellent album.

This is definitely a must have disc from Metallica. I purchased this cd as "like new condition" It seems to have lived up to this classification. If you don't already own a copy-I suggest you pick one up.

I love this album. It is one of my favorites. I owned a copy of it years ago and it was stolen along with many other cd's of mine. I wanted to own it again so I bought it. I feel it's one of Metallica's best.

This is a good, long-playing album, though its certainly not Metallica's best. If you're a guitar kid who likes to learn complicated riffs and show them off to your so-called friends, you'll like this album a whole lot. However, if you're a fan of well-mixed quality thrash albums to listen to over & over, you'll be disappointed with this album's production and overall quality. '...and Justice for All' sounds very tinny, thin, and to a degree incomplete and disjointed in comparison to their other works; it also does not come across as an instant classic as 'Master of Puppets' does. Make sure to turn up the bass more than you're used to while listening to this one, you might be able to hear it.

Lets start with "One" definatly among the best of Metallica. This was the First CD I got from Metallica, didn't listen to them much until the song "One", I had to let "Shortest Straw" and a couple of others on here to grow on me, but after I loved them all.

Most People don't relize is that this had to be one of the hardest for Metallica cause it came after the death of their Bassist "Cliff Burton", so now their new bassist "Jason Newstead" has to live up to one of the best Bassist their was. But they pulled it off.

This is a great album, and it is the LAST great album Metallica did. While everything afterwards was good, they just didn't have the same grit. I believe this is an album Cliff Burton would have loved.

Good album from what was once a great band. Metallica old albums always delivers until Re-load. Justice is one of their biggest selling album of all time, it's contains many of Metallica famous. If you want to hear Metallica at their finest hour this is the album for you. Good vocals, good riffs, good beat.

But where are they now?

  Best Metallica CD ever!

This CD is pretty much a classic by now but I it is still an awesome CD! Except for one or two songs this whole CD is filled with the best songs that you could listen to over and over again. True, you could download these songs of the internet for free but it would take you a while to get all the songs in a high quality copy so why not buy this CD for a couple bucks instead?

This is a great Metallica CD because it is a transition from the 1980's Metallica sound and the sound they had in the 1990's. Ever song on this CD is a heavy metal classic!

  one of the best ever
Review created: 08/03/07

This is the best metallica album ever. The only way this album could have been better is if Cliff Burton had never died. Great guitar riffs combined with melodic solos, interesting intros. There are no dull moments on this album at all. Its like yogi says about aflac if you dont have it you need it.

I clearly remember the day I heard this song for the first time in my life. Metallica's ONE. It was this time that Van Halen was the big thing in fabulous guitar work. Then along came Metallicas And Justice For All... album. I was COMPLETELY BLOWN AWAY!!! It was nice to know there were other really fabulous guitarist out there in this realm of music that could give Eddie Van Halen a run for his money. I do love Eddie Van Halen. I am not taking anything away from him. When you hear ONE for the first time, a new light was shed on music. And Justice For All... is STILL one of my favorite all time albums. And I still feel the same excitement I felt the first time I heard this album. Let's face it. When ANY musician(s) can impact you like that, they have made a very impactful impression. There is simply nothing in the music world that is greater than a band that can take you back to the first time they got your attention. And then you siad to yourself... THIS ROCKS!!! Turn it up!

P.S. GO SEE THEM IN CONCERT!!! It is 3 hours+ well spent. I have seen them 3 times and every show rocked.

My husband is a big Metallica fan and has wanted this cd for a while. I only order new cd's on half and until this one we have never been disappointed. The cd was listed as brand new and came to us with scratches on both the jewel case and cd. I just hope half can stop that from happening to the next customer. However I will still buy from half again. I'll just be more cautious.

  Metallic Extravaganza

I am a monstrous Metallica fan and own The Black Album, Load, and Reload. Wanting more metallic fusion, I decided to buy And Justice for All. This album is older than the ones I own, and is more metallic and harder. I love the guitar riffs and musicals, but I'm not a big fan of the lyrics and vocals. The music was absolutely fantastic.

iF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A GOOD EXAMPLE OF EARLY METALLICA...THIS IS IT. This has all the flavor of early Metallica before the change that some fans refer to when they became more of a Top 10 band. Range of music is great and each trakc is different. Must hafve for a true fan!

METALLICA KICKS @$$! Freakin' rock my face off!!!

There is one thing that I have always said about Metallica and it will always be true even 20 years from now. What they did in their early years was way too monumental to be overshadowed by any "selling out" or "getting soft" that they may be falling into these days. They not only started something amazing, but set such a standard for metal that can never be surpassed. You can not compare Metallica to any other band because they had more talent, heart, and drive than any other band I have ever heard. These guys were just kids when they wrote songs like "Fade To Black" and "Master of Puppets", and listening to those two songs alone will show you the magnitude of their ability as amazing song writers. This band did way more in the first 7 years of being together than most people do in their entire careers, and that will never change..

This is one of the last Metallica CD's that I have enjoyed from start to finish. I enjoyed this CD enough that after having lost my original, I went and bought a copy here on Ebay. By far my favorite Metallica CD. All others are weak in comparison.
