This is one of the most under-rated albums of all time. It would be impossible for me to disagree with the “mob” anymore than I already do. I think one of the main reasons why this album did not receive the sales that it should have is due to the fact that it was just released at the wrong time, which is most unfortunate.
I think Madonna really revels herself to the public. (In a different manner than what we are used to, if you catch my drift.) The songs seem to be much more personal than in any of her other albums, as they talk about Madonna coming to grips with her fortune and fame, her acceptance of her mother’s tragic death, and “finding herself” in terms of religion.
As far as my favorite song in the album goes, I would have to say it would have to be “Easy Ride,” even though each song featured in this album is wonderful in its own unique way. Although “Easy Ride” is probably one of the lowest ranking songs in Madonna’s career, I feel that is sends one of her most powerful messages. After all, the message pertains to all of us, since are lives will all surely go “round and round, just like a circle,” and if we try hard enough, we can finally “see the clearer picture.”
I suppose the bottom line is this: you NEED to purchase this CD. Perhaps it will help you on your journey to “finding yourself.” I know it has helped me.

some of Madonna's greatest work, i absolutely cannot get enough of this CD! every song has a different feel, and it's great being able to dance, sing, or just chill and listen to the music. 2 thumbs up!

Although most people did not like this CD and it did not do well in terms of sales, I would have to disagree with the general public. The CD is absolutely wonderful. The lyrics communicate pain, happiness, disappointment, but all are supported by well-chosen beats and rhythms. The music spans from guitar and piano to synthesizer and electronically generated sounds. If you are a fan of Madonna's later music, this is the one for you collection.

04.27.03 - I felt the need to update and just say that I have tried very hard to find some good in this album. I've taken a few hits about the low rating and honestly I simply feel that this album is an overproduced mess that does very little to showcase Madonna's talent. I'm a fan still - I always will be, but just not of this album. Madonna has been called a lot of things in her life b!tch, phony, bad actress. What a difference 20 years make. In that time, Madonna has made the leap from vulva-gazer to soul-searcher. At least in the former, Madonna knew how to make bouncy, heartfelt pop songs about love, female empowerment and deep dicking, but the introspective Madonna of American Life , her 10th studio album, comes up just as earnest but sadly minus any noticeable fun. I purposely waited a month before reviewing this cd because I wanted to be sure that my mind wouldn t change with repeated listens. Welcome to my fourth and final entry in kristinafh's May Music Madness write-off. Here, I will be reviewing a not-so-great album from someone who is, among many other things "hot". Now, let's face it, maybe she's not as sexy as she was in the "Erotica" days, but even at 44, Madonna is quite pleasing on the eyes. Unfortunately, her music hasn't had the same consistency as her looks and sex appeal have. :( It's probably unnecessary to provide any background information, because unless you've been living in the depths of Antarctica for the past twenty years, you know damn well who Madonna is....
