Action Packed Alien 2 Pack!

I see a lot of 2pk DVDs on the market today. Some are good & well thought out as far as what movies are featured. Others are a puzzling combination! This is one of the good ones featuring 2 alien related movies that combine Sci-Fi with good old fashion gut churning action!
1st up is "Alien Nation." The world has changed as a result of the arrival of a huge alien space craft with it's multitude of drone worker occupants who must be assimilated into our society. A brief blurb at the beginning tells us this & we are given numerous tales throughout to give us more information as to the alien's arrival & culture. James Caan as veteran detective Matt Sykes. Sykes is a typical movie cop; a drunk, divorced, but still a good cop! One night, he & his partner respond to a burglary. They discover the criminals to be 2 "Newcomers" as the aliens are called. Sykes' partner is killed by seeming super human newcomers. Later, Sykes is introduced to the newest member of the detective bureau, newcomer Samuel "Sam" Fransisco (played by Mandy Patinkin). Sykes volunteers to take on Fransisco as his new partner basically to gain access to the alien underworld so he can find his old partner's killers. What they uncover is a much more sinister plot that threatens to destroy the standing of the newcomers on earth! There is lots of action & intrigue throughout as Sykes & Fransisco work their way to a chilling action packed finale!
The movie does have it's lighter moments as Fransisco teaches Sykes about the alien culture; spoiled milk is like whiskey to them & raw wild game animals are a delicacy, as well as the fact that Sykes' last name, loosely translated, is a curse term in the alien tongue. There are also many humorous moments concerning newcomer names & Fransisco's desperate attempts to understand Sykes' odd motivations & techniques. This is a very good film! It spawned a short run TV drama as well.
Next up is "Enemy Mine." There is war in outer space between humans & the sinister reptile-like Dracs. Dennis Quaid is Willis Davidge, a hot shot fighter pilot with a devout hatred of the Dracs even though he's never even seen one. While involved in a battle, Davidge zealously pursues a Drac ship he has crippled & ends up crashing on a deserted planet. He sees the Drac bail out & heads out to finish the job, but his own clumsiness gets him caught. The Drac, Jeriba Shigen played by Louis Gossett Jr, proves to not be the hostile monster Davidge imagined. Davidge dubs him "Jerry" & the 2 begin to exchange cultures & language with many humorous results. The planet has many dangers as well & the 2 must fight for survival. Davidge soon finds out that Dracs have the ability to reproduce without a partner & Jerry is pregnant. Jerry is killed in childbirth, leaving Davidge to raise the Child Jerry named Zammis. Davidge does the best he can, but a new danger shows up to put them both in peril!
As I mentioned, this film has lots action & humor, but it is also a lesson against prejudices as mortal enemies become friends! It is one of my favorites!
