This is the original dub of akira, the one where kaneda's name isn't pronounced like our neighbors to the north. The old dub makes the movie feel grittier, uglier. I wasn't happy when pioneer decided to remaster the movie AND re-dub, now I can strip the audio from the vhs and splice it into the cleaned up dvd. Spielberg tried to "improve" Star Wars and was eventually pushed to release a theatrical version on dvd, since pioneer hasn't, I'll have to make it happen myself. Any movie worth that kind of effort has to be pretty good, right? Maybe I'm just a gigantic dork.

For my daughter. She liked it. Apparently there is another version that is a little better, but that was harder to win over EBay.

If you like japan anima, this is one for you! this movie starts of strong and keeps going from there right up to the epic ending. Beautiful graphics, awesome sound and a story like that will keep you adult kids right in your seats, if you can handle the gore. 5 star movie in my book!!!!

Akira: - Disturbing Is a Dish Best Served Animated
Review created: 01/06/05

Pros:
Animation, Artistic Style, Story, Disturbing

Cons:
Giant Kinetically Inclined Teddy Bears With Milk Seeping From Their Stiches

Of the thousands of anime movies out there, chances are that most people have only heard of a few of the more highly publicized North American releases. Movies such as Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Ninja Scroll, and Akira are among the more widely known. The topic of this review however, is the latter film. I can remember seeing a lot of publicizing for Akira, which wasn't too common for anime at the time. The film looked stylish and cool nonetheless, but it went ignored by me for years and years. It wasn't until a summer or two ago that I was given the opportunity to view this movie. To..

Akira the Special Edition: A classic Anime.
Review created: 01/18/06

Pros:
Captivating world, beautifully drawn, great story line, plenty of extras.

Cons:
Not for children, which isn t exactly a con.

According to some people, this is the father of modern anime. The old Anime I know of is very cartoony and unrealistic. Both in how they were drawn, how they moved, and the physical feats the characters performed. This movie is more like a live action movie rather than a cartoon/animated movie. The frame-rate was solid, the scenes are beautiful, and the music is top notch. This is yet another post-apocalyptic anime movie. The movie takes place in neo-Tokyo since Tokyo we know was blown up in WWIII. The story surrounds a motorcycle gang and the kids that make it up. They are a bunch of...

  Katsuhiro Otomo s -AKIRA-1988
Review created: 05/28/03
by: artbyjude -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Fantastic story, wonderful animation, characters, astounding music-

Cons:
Execrable English captioning. A little confusing and violent.

For the first movie that was the epitome of much of the anime that followed, AKIRA was landmark Japanese animation. It was not the first animated film, nor arguably the best, but it had all the elements to make it popular-and to keep it highly regarded by anime fans for the past 2 decades. In many other ways as well, it was groundbreaking animation. AKIRA was directed by the man who wrote and drew the AKIRA Manga (or comic) on which the movie was based, Katsuhiro Otomo. The screenplay was written with the help of Izo Hashimoto. (This is the only work attributed to him listed with IMDB) The...

  Lean-N-Mean Anime classic
Review created: 12/21/03

Pros:

Cons:

Akira is one of the all time classic animations, featuring a complex story that works as a cautionary tale about letting our weapons get out of control. It's probably best if I don't go into the story too much as it really is one of those films where you are best entering it without knowing too much. So all I will give away is that it involves a gang of bikers in a post Apocalyptic Tokyo. After an accident one of there members named Tetsuo is taken away by sinister government forces and... that's all that I'm going to reveal. Needless to say though, the story does get very dark as it advances.

Before the Matrix, there was Akira (Anime Outsider W/O)

Pros:

This is one review I owe, very belatedly to another user. Well trust me to be this late for ssjakira's Anime Outsider write-off . I am new to Anime myself, and I had to enter this write-off because I am aware that Anime as a genre of film first broke through in the 1980's- a decade which is my speciality. In compiling as comprehensive a list of 80's reviews as I can, I had yet to cover any examples of Japanese cinema or cartoons of the era- now I get to knock down both. I selected for myself two of the lauded classics of 80's Anime- "Grave of the Fireflies" (a film about World War II, seen...
