  Achtung baby U2

What I like about U2 is their ability to metamorphose successfully between their various albums, there is a gulf of difference between say Joshua tree [my favorite U2 album], and this album, or indeed any of the others. Whatever they do, the net result is always something that grabs you, original, emotive and inspired. This CD is no exception, worth buying for the ballad "one" alone. Overall there are no real duds here. A VERY good album, not quite their best but rates only just short of excellent, certainly better than the previous "rattle and hum", and at parity to the subsequent "zooropa". Check with your seller if the album your interested in is the digipak[cardboard cover] or a normal Cd as its available in both versions.

Not only is this arguably the best U2 album of all time, it's one of the best album's ever made. From rock-and-roll to melancholic melodies, this album has a lot of range that evokes a tremendous amount of emotion. Most true U2 fans know this album competes toe-to-toe with Joshua Tree!

One of U2's finest albums with lots of hits on it!
Review created: 10/09/06

U2 is is one of the most consistant contemporary bands out here. There is notthing to dislike about this particular title and the 3rd time I've had to buy it. Every song is good here and has at least three songs that everyone across the board will like such as, "One," "The Fly," and "Even Better Than The Real Thing." If you collect any cds for greatness or U2 fan, ya gotta have at least this one.

A defining moment in 90's rock music; a required listen

Most records come and go, the bad get purchased and forgotten, the mediocre make it to the radio for a while. The good records make waves and garner reviews, but the truly excellent are frozen forever in history as landmarks, and Actung Baby is no exception. I have seen this album on nearly every best of list imaginable, from Rolling Stone, to VH1, from "best albums of the 90's" lists to "best albums of all-time" lists. Why? Because not many albums have the sound and intrigue of this one. While other bands were cutting mainstream radio singles, U2 was crafting something adventurous and inspired, when they had everthing to lose. After the overwhelming success of The Joshua Tree (1987), the band released the less accepted Rattle And Hum (1988), and were in need of something to bring back the Joshua Tree listeners. Rather than create perfect pop, and staying away from the politically-inspired music of their earlier albums, they blended electronic sound and guitars and distortion into a polished masterpiece while everyone had their backs turned.

Songs like One and Mysterious Ways struck a nerve with many listeners, becoming instant classics in the U2 catalog. Songs like The Fly, Acrobat, and Love Is Blindness have dense musical journeys that form an album that is picturesque and exciting, few if any albums before or since have been as inventive or ambitious.

This is one of the best albums U2 ever made.
It is the breaking point between the old U2 and the new one.

  Another U2 classic!
Review created: 07/01/06

I bought this album the day it came out. I was in high school and I remember being disappointed. I had expected more of the same old U2 that I had come to love. I expected anthems and hymns and that solemn dignity that made U2 seem sacred and holy in my naive sanctimonious mind. What I got was something I didn't expect. Achtung Baby still has the same elements that have always charachterized them, but there was something darker in the sound, and something sinister that I couldn't put my finger on. I didn't understand it then, but I do now and I love it. Perhaps more than everything that came before it with the exception of WAR. That is why 15 years later I bought another copy of this gem.

The best U2 CD ever, you have to buy/listen to this

This is the best CD that U2 ever made. It is definately the one that you want if you are only wanting one U2 cd. To start off with, it has one of the most famous songs of all time, "one" which is a beautiful 'ballad' with the most sweetest melody and the tone is soooo melodic that it usually kind of leaves people entranced. As always, the lyrics on Bono's songs are soo powerful that they make you stop and think, unlike most lolly pop songs that are all beat and melody with no real effort in their lyrics.

The album's musical tone is very abstract, and set U2 again on fire when it was released, (as if they hadn't already been), but it reinforced their status as the major alternative selling band at the time. But what really sets U2 apart from others is their lack of care towards their critics, and their ability to produce melodic hard hitting songs with a story and feelings that make you shudder and feel melancholic, yet at the same time usually uplifting.

The 2nd song, 'the real thing' is another similiar type of song, with beautiful lyrics and melody. It starts out with a very edgy strong intro then drifts off into a wonderful complex mixture.

'Who's gonna ride your wild horses' is a beautiful song that is a tribute to strong independant women, and really looks deep into the lives of women who know what they want and don't settle for 2nd best. Its also a powerful flipside in that it details the struggle a man has for his love of a woman that he can't 'tame'. A common cliche in life that it really hit home for so many people.

'Mysterious ways' is another masterpiece of U2, with strong guitars and is a dedication to women that are different from the normal. It idolizes them, respects them and loves them. The song itself is one of my favourites, and the solo's and drums really make this a delight to listen to, topping off with the most well written lyrics that Bono and the guys could come up with.
The bass guitar is fantastic in this and the whole musical feel is almost like your at an amusement park on drugs.

1. Zoo Station
2. Even Better Than The Real Thing
3. One
4. Until The End Of The World
5. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses
6. So Cruel
7. The Fly
8. Mysterious Ways
9. Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World
10. Ultra Violet (Light My Way)
11. Acrobat
12. Love Is Blindness

Achtung, Baby: Proof Positive That U2 Rocks
Review created: 03/28/02
by: lambchops-- a member of Epinions and Lead in Music

Pros:
Twelve impressive tracks and the use of electronica

Cons:
...

I never got into anything from U2 until the release of Achtung, Baby. The first U2 album I ever had any exposure to was my cousin s cassette of The Joshua Tree, but at that time I was too involved in hair metal to care one way or another about the popular Irish band. In retrospect, I really should have disregarded my fascination with White Lion and Bon Jovi to investigate more promising bands a bit further. U2 is one of the few bands today that will go down in history as a classic act. The Dublin foursome was formed in 1976 after drummer Larry Mullen posted an ad looking for band mates on his.

Have you come here to play Jesus to the lepers in your head?

Pros:
Inventive guitar work, challenging and confounding lyrics, stellar mix of musical light and darkness.

Cons:
Percussion is a little thin at times; the occasional weak lyric.

Betcha thought I had abandoned my U2 project, didn't ya? OK, I'll admit, reviewing the entire U2 back catalogue does get a little more formidable with each album. Part of reason for that is because the Irish foursome seemed to make more and more sense as they developed more of a history against which to compare one of their more recent albums. Another factor is the fact that I've only been listening to music in any form since about 1993. So I'm now attempting my first review of an album that predates my experience with contemporary music. In my worldview, Achtung Baby, the album that started..

It is a tale told by Bono, filled with sound and fury....

Pros:
Perfection.

Cons:
I overdose on the word "emotion" in the following review.

Fumbling over one's words is not pleasant. For one of the first times I can recall, this assignment has rendered me speechless. For the better? The worse? Don't know, but it's certainly a huge stumbling block in the creative process of music journo. That coupled with the unspoken rule that you generally should avoid allowing your personal feelings to get in the way. When one is so emotionally jarred by a piece of art, it remains tough to view it as a separate entity anymore--- it's become a part of your life in that it applies to certain situations, taps into certain feelings, makes you...

One of my Three "Favorite" U2 Albums
Review created: 05/11/01
by: JediKermit -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Passionate performances, great music and lyrics, good mix of fast and slow

Cons:
There's not a track I'd skip

If you've read my entire body of 200+ reviews, then (well, first of all, I pity you) you know almost everything there is to know about my life. My self-imposed chaining to the water heater for ten years was a big part of it, as was my rejection of all music (except for anything from 1955-1972) until 1997. What broke me out of that shell? Well, a big part of it was U2. I started hanging out with some friends (something of a novelty for me) who listened to U2 everywhere they went, and it permeated me. Seasoned me. Marinated me like the sauerbraten in the back of my fridge that's looking a...

"Achtung Baby": All This Great Music Plus The Bassist's Wang On The Cover
Review created: 03/30/08
by: speeddemon531-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Music

Pros:
U2 successfully lightens up a bit, adding groove and wit to their work.

Cons:
It took them damn near a decade to record another album as good.

You've gotta give the guys from U2 credit for knowing that they needed a change. After a reasonably slow career buildup, the Irish band's proverbial cup ran over with the release of 1987's The Joshua Tree. While they'd always been critical darlings, this album sent them into rock and roll's major leagues commercially. Soon enough, The Edge's chiming guitar sound and Bono's gospel-inflected vocals were recognizable to everyone from college kids to grandparents to 11-year old kids in Brooklyn. After officially "conquering" America, the band released the concert movie Rattle
