About a Boy (2003, DVD)

Bought this movie because Hugh Grant stars in it. I enjoy most Hugh Grant movies. This one is Ok. Hugh wants to meet women, makes up he is single dad so he can attend single parents club so he can meet single moms. Gets caught up in his lie and eventually found out. By this time one of the single moms has a son that attaches himself to Hugh. At first Hugh is annoyed by the boy but then everything works out in the end. Some humor worth watching.

A fun movie and a good role for Hugh Grant!
Review created: 11/26/07

I am a Hugh Grant fan and think he is great in this film as the quintessential playboy who gets his life turned around for the better. Obviously nothing new here, but the fresh and entertaining performances from the talented cast make for a nice film that is funny and heart warming.

This movie is hysterical. The characters are lovable and realistic. This movie is great for guys who think they will be able to stay disconnected forever and also for women who don't think men can change.

A great film with something for everyone!

About a Boy is a great movie for families with older children. Although some of the adult themes aren't appropriate for younger children, older middle school kids and high school kids will love watching this with their parents. Hugh Grant plays Will, a man who preys on single women. While attempting to conquer another, he meets a boy names Marcus. Marcus is desperately trying to find a way to keep his depressed mother happy in an effort to keep her from committing suicide. (Despite this aspect, the movie really is uplifting.) Although Will isn't really interested in dating Marcus's mother, the two of them become friends.

The best scene in the film is one we can all relate to, in which Marcus sings "Killing Me Softly" at a talent show in an effort to make her happy. He is nearly laughed off stage until Will steps in to save the day.

A cute movie that is often overlooked. Don't miss this one!

 About a Boy Surprised Me (Lean-N-Mean 2)
Review created: 12/15/03
by: drdevience -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Everything

Cons:
I didn't see it sooner.

Ok. Yes. I did read lots of great reviews... a few slammed it hard, but most were singing it's praises. Yet I doubted. I should not have. About a Boy is a work of art. Me, I didn't mean anything. About anything, to anyone. And I knew that guaranteed me a long, depression-free life. Hugh Grant plays a single playboy, Will, who lives on the royalties of a one-hit-wonder song his father wrote. He's quite happy being a shallow git and living for himself, until he hits on the idea to make-up a child and go to single parents meetings in order to seek out single females who may be in need of his...

The Weitz Brothers Grow Up With A Film About Growing Up. 'About A Boy'
Review created: 02/15/03
by: Vormancian -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Hugh Grant. Adaptation. Narration. Blending of comedy and drama.

Cons:
Very few. A few seconds of a scene here and there.

There is a certain subtle message in About a Boy , though you probably wouldn t expect to hear that. Oddly, it s the same subtle message from one of the year s other wonderful films, CQ. The message is a simple one. It doesn t matter how much free time you have, or how much money you have, or even how many really nifty doodads fill your apartment (or spaceship), shag carpeting is just really cool. That s about the only subtle message you re going to get from About A Boy , but that shouldn t be seen as a fault. Not necessarily anyway. Virtually every work of classic literature is pretty direct.

 About Growing Up
Review created: 05/17/02
by: gungian -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Well-scripted, well acted, well delivered. A nice package.

Cons:
Tends to trivialize mental illness.

Today half the kids in the county swarmed into theaters to see the latest Star Wars epic. Today Mrs. G and I diverged from the crowd at our local Cineplex and took in a much different movie. About A Boy turned out to be a most entertaining and enjoyable choice. THE STORY LINE Will s father penned a contagious musical ditty that inexplicably became a holiday staple. That one hit wonder still generates a continuous revenue stream. As a result, Will does well, Will does absolutely nothing. His entire existence revolves around himself. In fact, he could not be more self-centered had his parents...

About A Boy - About A Bad Marketing Ploy
Review created: 05/17/02
by: kristinafh -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Little Nicholas Hoult was a ray of light.

Cons:
Directing was bad. The marketing p*ssed me off.

Preamble Unbelievable. I fell for it again. Those damn critics with their tag lines of, "Best Comedy of 2002", and "Just Like Bridget Jones's Diary". And let's not forget those trailers that showed Hugh Grant as a bumbling, non-committal male caught in the middle of a baby/kid-oriented revolution. Grrrr. I hate it when I anticipate the opening of a movie and then it fails me. Grrrr. The Story Will Freeman (Hugh Grant) is a 38-year-old single man who doesn't have to do anything. Yep, that's right. He has the luxury of not having to work because he lives off the royalties of a song that his...

 No Hugh-man is an island
Review created: 05/17/02
by: Grouch -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Grant sparkles, the direction is confident, the score by Badly Drawn Boy zips and bounces

Cons:
The story follows a predictable course.

Will Freeman is an island. Surrounded by oceans of women, Will goes through life with the devil-may-care attitude of a hipster playboy; he s a modern rogue with a smooth-as-Kahlua charm and an eye-twinkle grin. He s a bloke always on the make for women, and gets them with remarkable, Cary Grantish ease. But when his dates press him for personal information mainly, What, exactly, do you do? he s forced to do a nano-second of soul-searching, then reply with: Nothing. I do nothing, actually. It s true. He s independently wealthy, living off the royalties from a one-hit wonder written by his...
