As usual, Michael Franks is the ultimate wordsmith, with his lyrics inviting contemplation and reflection. The music is instrument-rich with horns, flutes, saxaphone, great guitar work, and more. Of interest is "In the Yellow House" from the musical "Noa, Noa." A conversation between Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh, this duet is sung by Franks and Brian Mitchell. Jazz aficionados will love this cd as well as anyone wanting relaxing meaningful music. Especially good are "Without Your Love" and "Abandoned Garden." The latter speaks of the loss of Franks' friend, Antonio Carlos Jobim, who is memoralized in the liner notes. The music is entirely dreamy and contemplative. A good buy.

For those of you who may be new to the unique style and craft of Michael Franks, this CD may take some getting used to. His work is difficult to categorize, but it is a sort of jazz fusion with an element of pop. His vocal delivery is not so much singing, as poetic phrasing. He paints still life pictures with his voice and lyrics that are as much a work of art as a Renoir or Cezzanne. Franks' songs are enticing vignettes that often evoke a sense of pain with pleasure The first track "This Must Be Paradise" combines salsa style with delicate piano work and flute, with guitar interludes and...
