Pros:
cinematography, narration, acting, archetypes
Cons:
some audiences require explosions
Before its release, I had been afraid to see the film, concerned that it would be emptied of life as The Milagro Beanfield War, a book less important to me than River was in Robert Redford s film of it. I knew that at the very least, the scenery in the film had to be beautiful. (And it was with shimmering cinematography of Montana by Philippe Rousselot, who was justly honored with an Academy Award for it.) Norman Maclean s voice may not be everything in his masterful novella, but it accounts for much of its power. Thus, I was very pleased that Redford retained it (and, indeed, did it himself).
