A League of Their Own - There's No Crying In Baseball.....
Review created: 04/28/04

Pros:
great stories, acting, soundtrack

Cons:
picture quality a little off, Marshall seems to mumble through the commentary

Having watched movies such as Far From Heaven and Mona Lisa Smile lately, it was very refreshing to pick up the newly released special edition of A League of Their Own. Instead of a film that seems to show how difficult it was for women, A League of Their Own seems to show that there were opportunities as well. The plot details the formation of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League during World War II. At that time, so many professional baseball players in the major leagues were either being drafted or volunteering to fight that the owners were afraid baseball would have to be...

A League of Their Own : Starring Tom Hanks and Geena Davis
Review created: 05/09/01

Pros:
baseball, great acting, setting, history filled, Hanks and Davis Chemistry, Historical significance

Cons:
only that it did not last longer

During the Second World War, the United States needed something to keep the people back in America entertained. With all of the men going into the service, and many professional baseball players enlisting as well, America needed something that would help baseball survive until the war finally came to an end. The thought process came about that they should give women the chance to play baseball instead of men. The call went out to find women across the country that could play ball and would come to New York to give it a try. Most of the players that responded were avid softball players in...

Are you crying? Is she crying? Quotes in Movies W/O
Review created: 08/03/04

Pros:
Geena Davis, Tom Hanks and the All American Girls Professional Baseball League

Cons:
Couldn't find a one

Probably one of my favorite movies that drew a famous quote was A League Of Their Own when the crotch-grabbing, spitting, drunken coach, Tom Hanks, confronts one of the girls and asks Are you crying? Is she crying? There is no crying in baseball. There. Is. No. Crying. In. Baseball! From the opening scene, based in the 90 s, we meet the first of our lady All-Stars, Dottie, as she packs for a trip she obviously doesn t want to take, to the Baseball Hall of Fame. It seems the All American Girls Professional Baseball League is being inducted into the hall of fame and they want the stars of the...

League of Their Own: When Throwing Like a Girl Was a Good Thing
Review created: 05/29/01
by: naphtalia -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Baseball, strong women, good script, funny.

Cons:
a bit hokey in places

This movie is a long flashback to the days before the feminist revolution when the men went off to war and the women stayed home. With the men away, major league baseball was ready to close, but women were hired to play in the All American Girls Baseball League (note: not women, girls). Penny Marshall directed this story which is based on the real story of the AAGBL. This fictional account tells about the Rockford Peaches, especially two sisters who play for them. Kit and Dotty Henson (Lori Petty and Geena Davis) are respectively a pitcher and a catcher. Dotty is married and her hubby is away.

Fun film in spite of its flaws
Review created: 12/19/00

Pros:
Good script, solid acting from most of the folks involved

Cons:
Don't I see enough of Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell as it is? Why are they in this thing?

I've enjoyed this film since it came out in 1992. I saw in at the theater, enjoyed the hell out of it, and then bought the VHS tape shortly after it was released. This film is based (well, loosely based, but I'll get to that later) on the All-American Girls Baseball League that was started in 1943 when pro baseball was suffering from a shortage of men. The men, of course, were busy trying to win World War II, but Americans still craved baseball. The solution? Start a league featuring women. Now, before I talk about the merits of this film, I feel I should mention the flaws because they are...
