great story, terrific performances by Robert Duvall, James Earl Jones and Irma P. Hall

pacing very slow and drags at times
Billy Bob Thornton is one of those Hollywood people that makes me scratch my head. He can have flashes of absolute brilliance and moments of behavior that are so outrageous he makes me scratch my head. I also don t understand the attraction so many beautiful women feel for him, but that s neither here nor there. A Family Thing was one of those moments of brilliance. Pros:
Good Message, Excellent Acting, Wonderful Character Development
Cons:
Repetitive, Pacing Issues, Somewhat Overdone Plot
My original title for this review was "A Close Call on A Family Thing," but then I began to write what I like about the film. My original thought was that it would be 3 stars and it would be close on whether I recommended the film or not. As I considered the film more, despite its shortcomings, my rating moved to at least 3 1/2 and a solid recommendation. That is to say that as I began writing my "pros" I understood what I'm always preaching around here a little better as it applied to this film; the most important aspect of an art like film or novels is character.
