  Ron Howard's - A Beautiful Mind-2001
Review created: 07/06/02

Pros:
Crowe, Connelly and Bettany, the story, and the musical score

Cons:
None , unless you want the movie to match the book word for word

This movie won 4 Academy awards, 2 for director Ron (Opie) Howard , 1 for Jennifer Connelly, and one for the screenplay author, Akiva Goldsman. . Did it deserve such acclaim? Yes, it did That s the short answer. But it became the best picture based almost entirely on the strength of Russell Crowe s performance, who did NOT win an Oscar.. Horner s haunting music (Titanic) also failed to receive an Oscar. Not having seen this in the theater, I waited out the DVD version. But I bought and read Sylvia Nasar s biography cover to cover first. The book is well written, and gives a depth to the...

  Into John Nash's Beautiful Mind
Review created: 04/09/02

Pros:
Great acting, excellent direction

Cons:
This should not have gotten the Oscar for adapted screenplay

I can vividly remember watching the Oscars two weeks ago. It was a Monday, the first day of my Easter break. My parents thought it would be best if they got me up early so that I can start revising for my exams in June. Without much of a choice, I got out of bed and once my parents left, I decided to turn on the TV. Low and behold, the Oscars were on my television. Therefore, I sat through the whole ceremony eagerly waiting to hear what would win Best Picture (I was confident that Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring would definitely get the award). I was, however, surprised to watch.

A BEAUTIFUL MIND -- If Oliver Stone Had Directed It, They Would Call Him Crazy!
Review created: 01/03/02
by: macresarf1 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Performances by Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, supporting cast. Deakin's photography, Wynn Thomas's clever production design.

Cons:
Simplified to such a degree that in some sense, it is anticlimactic and dishonest.

Ever think you've got something figured out? And then find that people say you were wrong? Makes you feel confused, huh? Maybe . . . makes you feel a bit nuts. Well, no -- angry perhaps. Either you are wrong, or they are! But which? Your therapist might say, "You need a win-win solution!" Such was the problem of one of the most influential figures of the 20th Century: John Forbes Nash, Jr. There were two of him, just as there are two films entitled A BEAUTIFUL MIND, one that Akiva Goldsman wrote and Ron Howard directed . . . and one they didn't. "Who was John Forbes Nash, Jr?" you ask. Born.
