Hello fellow movie lovers. Although I did officially rate the movie as "average", I would give it *** 1/2*. This is the plot scenario as it reads from the DVD:
"A Lone time traveler fron the year 2035 must solve a riddle that may save his people...but it may also take him to the brink of madness. Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, and Brad Pitt star in this brilliant sci-fi masterpiece from Terry Gilliam, the acclaimed director of The Fisher King.
After the world's population is devastated by a killer virus, survivors must live in dank underground communities. Cole, (Bruce Willis), "volunteers" to travel into the past to obtain a pure virus sample, thereby helping scientists develop a cure. Along the way, he cross paths with a beautiful psychiatrist, (Stowe), and a one-card-short-of-a-full-deck mental patient, (Pitt). But the race is on , as Cole searches for the Army of the 12 Monkeys, a radical group linked to the deadly disease. With unforgettable performances and imaginative special effects, 12 Monkeys is a modern-day classic laced with Gilliam's trade mark wit and dazzling visual style."
CBS News person Dennis Cunningham proclaimed 12 Monkeys as "one of the years best films". Yeah, I've never heard of him either.
I do agree Terry Gilliam is amazing. He has a most unique style. As we have seen in other movies of his, he certainly has the range to do whatever he invisions well
There were some small similarities between a few aspects of 12 Monkeys and Brazil that I did not feel fit well. The demeanor of the scientists was very stiff and contrived. They were all the same. Not even as how you might think real scientists might be in that situation.
The effects were generally very good but some of the set designs seemed too outdated and crudely constructed. They were in the year 2035. I don't care how much society collapses, I would think you could find stuff to re-use that did not look like it came from the 1920's.
In general I liked the plot. In retrospect, it's one of those movies that nowadays does not seem so far fetched. E-coli is rampant, Avian Flu is spreading more each year, anti-biotics are losing their power or diseases are becoming more resistant, and so on. It's like The "Day After Tomorrow". How much stuff has happened since that was released? More severe weather all over the world, glaciers in serious retreat, an ancient ice shelf just broke away from the mainland last week. OK, now I'm a little concerned. Anyway..
Bruce Willis is one of my favorite actors. I've dubbed him "the bloodiest man in Hollywood". Either I did or he won an MTV award in that catagory. It fits no matter what. He's done some forgettable movies but he has done some great stuff. As a man, I appreciate his tenacity, bravery, commitment, toughness...actually I'm a little jealous.
I'm no Madeline Stowe fan or non-fan. I did like her performance here.
Then there's Brad Pitt. For our women, us guys pretend we are more disgusted with his recent association with Angelina Jolie than we really are. Most of do feel what he did to Jennifer was cold and she deserved better. But then we think, wow! he's with Angelina Jolie! Don't get mad ladies. We know we would never be in her league. We know you have your Angelina Jolie. We know it's probably Brad Pitt. Although I felt he did a great job portraying his character, I did think about Dennis Hopper. I think you'll see why to.
There's no more space. See the movie, in DTS if you can.
