  Another stellar Willis performance

Twelve Monkeys

Bruce Willis is spectacular in this futuristic thriller. Twelve Monkeys is about a scientist who goes back in time to try and stop the release of a toxin in the air that caused the demolition of man kind.

Bruce Willis is the main character but the supporting cast is so superb that even if Willis was replaced with a chimp this movie still would've rocked. Brad Pitt throws down a spectacular performance as the leader of an enviromental group known as the 12 Monkeys.

Overall this is one of my favorite Sci-Fi films of all time, it's innovative, creative, and tons of fun.

I didn't like this movie the first time I saw this back in '96, but after watching it a couple years ago I had to buy it, and now I watch it routinely.

Final Verdict:

5/5

Rent or Buy?: If you love Bruce Willis, you'll love this film. Although I'd recommend renting it first though, if you're not a huge sci-fi fan, just in case.

I am a movie collector and I just had to add this to my collection. Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt are remarkable actors in this film. If you like sci-fi movies about time travel and mental illness, this is the movie you got to watch.

  Watch The Bonus Features First!

My wife saw this years ago with friends. It was a complicated and compelling movie! I had never seen it before but put it on our list to view.

We rented this DVD yesterday and saw it last night, but first watched the Bonus Features. I am glad we did, as it gave me a better understanding of what the movie wanted to be, at least in the director's vision of it.

It was a good movie, a little complicated, and probably a little confusing if we hadn't seen the Bonus Features first.

Bruce Willis was a little softer than in most of his movies.
Brad Pitt was a little WILDER than in most of his movies!
Madeleine Stowe played a great part as the psychologist.

Good movie for a time travel flick!

Good as action/adventure and excellent as social commentary. "To be a good citizen is to be a good consumer." It's scary how much of our lives is caught up with not owning stuff, but aquiring it. Very good movie.

  12 Monkeys-DTS Version

Hello fellow movie lovers. Although I did officially rate the movie as "average", I would give it *** 1/2*. This is the plot scenario as it reads from the DVD:

"A Lone time traveler fron the year 2035 must solve a riddle that may save his people...but it may also take him to the brink of madness. Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, and Brad Pitt star in this brilliant sci-fi masterpiece from Terry Gilliam, the acclaimed director of The Fisher King.
After the world's population is devastated by a killer virus, survivors must live in dank underground communities. Cole, (Bruce Willis), "volunteers" to travel into the past to obtain a pure virus sample, thereby helping scientists develop a cure. Along the way, he cross paths with a beautiful psychiatrist, (Stowe), and a one-card-short-of-a-full-deck mental patient, (Pitt). But the race is on , as Cole searches for the Army of the 12 Monkeys, a radical group linked to the deadly disease. With unforgettable performances and imaginative special effects, 12 Monkeys is a modern-day classic laced with Gilliam's trade mark wit and dazzling visual style."

CBS News person Dennis Cunningham proclaimed 12 Monkeys as "one of the years best films". Yeah, I've never heard of him either.

I do agree Terry Gilliam is amazing. He has a most unique style. As we have seen in other movies of his, he certainly has the range to do whatever he invisions well

There were some small similarities between a few aspects of 12 Monkeys and Brazil that I did not feel fit well. The demeanor of the scientists was very stiff and contrived. They were all the same. Not even as how you might think real scientists might be in that situation.

The effects were generally very good but some of the set designs seemed too outdated and crudely constructed. They were in the year 2035. I don't care how much society collapses, I would think you could find stuff to re-use that did not look like it came from the 1920's.

In general I liked the plot. In retrospect, it's one of those movies that nowadays does not seem so far fetched. E-coli is rampant, Avian Flu is spreading more each year, anti-biotics are losing their power or diseases are becoming more resistant, and so on. It's like The "Day After Tomorrow". How much stuff has happened since that was released? More severe weather all over the world, glaciers in serious retreat, an ancient ice shelf just broke away from the mainland last week. OK, now I'm a little concerned. Anyway..

Bruce Willis is one of my favorite actors. I've dubbed him "the bloodiest man in Hollywood". Either I did or he won an MTV award in that catagory. It fits no matter what. He's done some forgettable movies but he has done some great stuff. As a man, I appreciate his tenacity, bravery, commitment, toughness...actually I'm a little jealous.

I'm no Madeline Stowe fan or non-fan. I did like her performance here.

Then there's Brad Pitt. For our women, us guys pretend we are more disgusted with his recent association with Angelina Jolie than we really are. Most of do feel what he did to Jennifer was cold and she deserved better. But then we think, wow! he's with Angelina Jolie! Don't get mad ladies. We know we would never be in her league. We know you have your Angelina Jolie. We know it's probably Brad Pitt. Although I felt he did a great job portraying his character, I did think about Dennis Hopper. I think you'll see why to.

There's no more space. See the movie, in DTS if you can.

  A great, unknown sci-fi film
Review created: 09/16/06

In true Terry Gilliam (Brazil, The Fisher King) style, this dark, futuristic film doesn't disappoint. Madeleine Stowe plays a psychologist trying to unearth the truth about a man traveling from the future back in time to save the world from extinction. When the truth is revealed, everything seems to come together in one a-ha moment.

It's entertaining, and one of the films that turned Bruce Willis into a more complex and respected actor. Although a bit confusing if you don't pay close enough attention, those who stick with it will be rewarded for their time. If you're a sci-fi or even suspense fan, this is one to watch.
